Came from Shanghai, China, Guo-yun served as a pipa soloist of the Fuzhou Air Force Art Troupe since 1972. In 1982, he served as a pipa player of the Hubei Opera and Dance Theater.

Guo-yun is an experienced pipa performer and has participated in many Chinese festival events and community concert performances.
